this website has gone crazy

I apologize for the appearance of the layout of this blog.  This website just starts doing strange things whenever it decides to.
Taco Abajo (down or below)
 217 1/2 West Broughton Street
Savannah, GA

Describing themselves as "a taco truck...hold the wheels," Taco Abajo is definitely a no-frills restaurant.  Housed in the basement location which was formerly home to T-Rex Mex, this restaurant dishes up what they call "authentic Mexican street food." As we descended the stairs, I realized that this restaurant's decor was suffering from multiple personalities.  It could not decide whether it wanted to be a Mexican cantina (Mexican birdbath at the door and pierced tin lighting), a skater hangout (bold, colorful graphics on the walls), or a sports bar (too many tvs tuned into Sunday night football and NASCAR).  Worst of all, some of the graphics are painted right onto the beautiful old brick walls.  I could not help reminiscing about the beautiful Day of the Dead theme that used to welcome us to this subterranean location.

At a Mexican restaurant, I am accustomed to getting a piping hot basket of hot tortilla chips and salsa almost before I'm seated at the table.  Not so at the Taco Abajo, where you must order chips from the Starters appetizer menu ($2 per basket with salsa or $4 per basket with guacamole or queso). This was a bit off-putting to me.

Reading further down the menu, I realized that diners have a choice of ordering their food served as a taco, a burrito, or as a salad.  House specialties include Carne Asada, Grilled Veggies or Chorizo and Black Bean.  The Baja Style Seafood part of the menu included Modelo Battered Fish, Grilled Fish, or Garlic Shrimp each with Sonoran Slaw and Ensenada Crema.  I chose the Garlic Shrimp Burrito and Jennifer had the Modelo Battered Fish Burrito.

Both looked the same, were average-sized, and served in a plastic basket.  I don't know if I'd go so far as to say the food is authentic, but it's tasty and fresh.  The slaw added a slight crunch and a zesty flavor to the grilled shrimp burrito.

The drinks stayed refilled without a wait, but overall the service was just average, too. Jennifer says she will probably return.  I haven't made up my mind about that just yet.  Total bill for 2 burritos and 2 soft drinks=$18+ is a bit pricey for such a no-frills meal.
